Clean energy in the US, Canada and Mexico is getting a big boost. President Obama plans to announce groundbreaking clean energy policy this week at The Ottawa Summit. The announcement introduces a commitment to move North America’s electricity to 50% clean power sources by 2050.

Florida’s largest utility, FPL, is seeking a nearly 30% increase in electricity rates. Customers who want to express concerns about the FPL rate increase can do so in person. A hearing, on June 15, in West Palm Beach will be held at the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County. The hearing begins at 6 p.m. The facility is located at 7501 N. Jog Rd in West Palm Beach.

In an effort to stave off further revenue losses Jacksonville Energy Authority CFO, Melissa Dykes, has proposed a board motion to imposed new mandatory minimum charges called “Demand Charges” on Jacksonville customers. Dykes blames future compliance costs associated with the clean power plan and believes demand charges would make customers use energy more efficiently.

Another study commissioned by The Alliance for Solar Choice (TASC) a proactive advocacy group representing solar companies and over 100,000 rooftop solar customers has once again revealed that rooftop home solar panels provide a benefit to the grid and everyone connected to it. The study was prepared by utility industry analysts and utility experts to determine if net-metering was in fact a fair way to compensate solar customers for the occasional excess energy their solar panels generate. This study now joins the handful of other studies that have been similarly conducted that prove, locally supplied and consumed, solar energy has significant benefits to the grid. In fact, when weighed against the costs the positive benefits, when including societal benefits such as reduced pollution, actually exceed the retail rate.

The Daytona 500 is one of if not the highest profile race in NASCAR and the $400 million Daytona Rising project now hosts highly visible solar energy canopy installations that are a great example of Florida solar energy at work.
