Hawaii Utility Regulators (HPUC) issued an order on Friday that outright rejected Florida Power & Light (FPL) parent company Nextera Energy’s bid to buy Hawaii Electric Industries (HEI), Hawaii’s largest utility. The long awaited decision affirms Hawaii’s commitment to customer choice and clean energy. While Nextera will forfeit $90 million exiting the deal plus an additional $5 million in expense reimbursements. The biggest loss -- Pride.

Florida’s largest utility, FPL, is seeking a nearly 30% increase in electricity rates. Customers who want to express concerns about the FPL rate increase can do so in person. A hearing, on June 15, in West Palm Beach will be held at the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County. The hearing begins at 6 p.m. The facility is located at 7501 N. Jog Rd in West Palm Beach.

Mandatory Minimum Fees for Customers
In an effort to stave off further revenue losses Jacksonville Energy Authority CFO, Melissa Dykes, has proposed a board motion to imposed new mandatory minimum charges called “Demand Charges” on Jacksonville customers. Dykes blames future compliance costs associated with the clean power plan and believes demand charges would make customers use energy more efficiently.

Floridians who live in the Lakeland Electric service territory will no longer be offered the opportunity to participate in solar net-metering starting January 1, 2016. The municipal electric utility and member of the Florida Municipal Electric Association is the first utility in Florida to completely abandon net-metering and begin to discriminate against customers who choose to self generate.

Floridians in Martin County should expect to pay 6% or more each month on their Florida Power and Light bills next year. The County Commission has passed a franchise fee hike on electric bills to collect revenue to pay for maintenance of roads, buildings, parks, drainage and other infrastructure. The fee implementation is a consumption based fee, in other words, an additional tax on energy usage -- a basic human need that most cannot avoid. Higher users will pay a higher dollar amount; lower users will contribute less.
