Net energy metering, or net-metering, is the policy that lets rooftop solar customers sell their excess energy back to the power grid during the day, typically at retail rates or credits. Later in the evening as the sun goes down they rely on the grid for their energy, simply buying back their banked credits or in most cases, credits plus more energy.

Another study commissioned by The Alliance for Solar Choice (TASC) a proactive advocacy group representing solar companies and over 100,000 rooftop solar customers has once again revealed that rooftop home solar panels provide a benefit to the grid and everyone connected to it. The study was prepared by utility industry analysts and utility experts to determine if net-metering was in fact a fair way to compensate solar customers for the occasional excess energy their solar panels generate. This study now joins the handful of other studies that have been similarly conducted that prove, locally supplied and consumed, solar energy has significant benefits to the grid. In fact, when weighed against the costs the positive benefits, when including societal benefits such as reduced pollution, actually exceed the retail rate.

Floridians in Martin County should expect to pay 6% or more each month on their Florida Power and Light bills next year. The County Commission has passed a franchise fee hike on electric bills to collect revenue to pay for maintenance of roads, buildings, parks, drainage and other infrastructure. The fee implementation is a consumption based fee, in other words, an additional tax on energy usage -- a basic human need that most cannot avoid. Higher users will pay a higher dollar amount; lower users will contribute less.
